The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service is a prestigious award. It takes an enormous amount of time and effort to even complete the nomination process, and it is even harder to win.
It was a privilege to be involved in the assessment for their nomination and what struck me first was the thought of what would happen if Walk were not here. The value they provide to the community, from the financial to the practical, is incredible.
The lived experience of the volunteers was also unique. Many of the men who come through Walk participate in the help of others, thus multiplying the impact.
I must admit I also found their work incredibly moving. As someone with family experience of severe drug addiction, I can attest to how it absorbs and affects the whole family. I have understood that pain and to see Walk helping those around the person in addiction was truly humble.
I find it interesting that Stoke is looking for a new identity as a post-industrial city.
It is trying to discover what comes next. The men at Walk are doing the same thing, trying to find their identity, trying to see what could be next for them, and I think Walk do a fantastic job of providing the support and facilities to help them in that process.
I remember being taken on a tour of The Railway during my assessment visit and I was struck by the quality of the accommodation and the high standards in everything Walk did.
This award is important for many reasons, but I would like to point out that it is an award in perpetuity. This means the award is for the organisation, not an individual, and it will be with Walk Ministries long after the founders leave or retire. This award acknowledges the contribution of Walk and will hopefully unlock significant funding and respect for the life-changing services they provide to the community.
